Minneapolis Downtown East/North Loop Master Plan
The City of Minneapolis recently received an award from the American Planning Association (APA) for
their submission of the Downtown East/North Loop Master Plan. The plan regards 500 acres of land
to the east and west of the City's Central Business District (CBD), lands ripe for redevelopment
due to opening of the Hiawatha Light Rail Transit system, that runs throughout the study areas and
beyond to the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America, in suburban Bloomington.
The Master Plan deals with the planning principles and policies required to see the establishment
of what its authors’ call ‘complete communities’ – mixed-use precincts where
people, live, work, learn, shop and play without the need to drive a car.
IBI Group served as Prime Consultant for the study, with team support from Hoisington Koegler Group (urban design / landscape architecture), Benshoof & Associates (traffic), both of Minneapolis, and Bonz/REA, Boston (market analysis / economic feasibility). IBI Group’s Gary Andrishak served as Project Manager for the assignment.
